The Color Run

And now for something completely different…

The Hong Kong Color Run is a 5-km running event that has no winners and no time limit. It is a family activity that emphasizes fun and exercise rather than actual competition, and seems inspired by the Holi Festival, the Hindu festival of color. Part a larger worldwide series, this inaugural event in Hong Kong was sold out in a few hours after tickets became available – all 16,000 slots! I was lucky enough to get a spot through AsiaWorld-Expo, where the event was held (and where my wife happens to work 🙂 ).

Color Run HKAs part of the race package, you get a white T-shirt, number, headband, and a sealed phone/ID holder. You’ll need that because at various stages throughout the run (every kilometer stage), you’re pelted with food-grade colored cornstarch. By the end of the course, everyone is covered in bright technicolor powder. It’s all good fun! There’s also a huge dance party at the finish line.

Despite the overcast weather, the threatening rain didn’t materialize, otherwise it would have been an even bigger mess… I wrapped my camera in cling wrap and then doubled it with a plastic bag, and it worked to keep it nice and clean (after hearing horror stories of destroyed gear at these events).

  1. So how did you get off the colours from your skin? I saw plenty of ‘pink’ faces at Wan Chai MTR in the afternoon, they clearly hadn’t had any luck in getting the colour off.

    • Basically a good long shower and lots of scrubbing! I hear that the MTR was a mess after the event, even though they gave out plastic ponchos after the race.

  2. It looks like a great day out – hope your run went well! 🙂 I could not go out to Asia World Expo yesterday, now I regret it, your pics look great.

    • Yes it was great fun. Cleanup of the venue must have been a major undertaking, though. Once the powder gets wet it really sticks – and of course they were handing out wet napkins to the runners haha!
