If Denmark is the happiest country in the world, then Dragør could be the happiest place in Denmark. This idyllic fishing village is only 13 kilometers from downtown Copenhagen, but feels a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the capital. Located on the southeastern shore of Amager island and opposite Sweden across the Øresund Strait, the old town and harbour is lined with cobblestone lanes and well-preserved traditional Danish buildings, almost like a living postcard from a different era.

Founded in the 12th century, Dragør became a prosperous port with one of the largest fishing industries in the country, particularly for the catching and processing of herring. As the harbour of Copenhagen eventually became the dominant trading center, the importance of the village diminished, but fishing remains an important source of income for local businesses today. The port is also home to an avid sailing community, with many private sailboats docked in the marina. The preserved buildings and charming atmosphere makes Dragør a popular tourist destination, and an ideal day-trip from Copenhagen.

The main street, leading down to the old harbour, is lined with small shops, cafes, and restaurants. A maze of narrow side streets and quiet alleyways, dotted with cozy courtyards and gardens, make for a great afternoon of exploration especially at the height of a Danish summer. These yellow-painted houses with thatched and red-tiled roofs are still in use today as private residences, many being hundreds of years old.
