Wonderful Copenhagen: Tivoli Gardens

You cannot be in Copenhagen and not pay a visit one of the most popular and beloved attractions in the city. Tivoli Gardens is located right in the center of downtown, next to the central train station and steps from city hall. Step through its gates and you are transported to a magical place that retains much of its old-world charm within its storied walls. A national treasure, this is the famed amusement park that inspired Walt Disney to build his Disneyland, and holds a special place in the hearts of many Danes.

Founded in 1843, Tivoli is the second-oldest continuously operating amusement park in the world, surpassed only by Dyrehavsbakken park, also in Denmark and located just north of Copenhagen. For thrill seekers and adventurers, the park offers plenty of modern, state-of-the-art rides in addition to one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the world, well over a century old. There are also lots of wonderfully nostalgic rides and games that add to the old-world feel of the lush gardens. Restaurants for every taste and budget are plentiful, and there are venues for concerts and performing arts, including free shows with specific music themes for different days of the week. There is really something for everyone, and this is perhaps the secret of Tivoli’s success over so many generations of fans.

While the park is open year-round for special occasions (like Halloween, Christmas, and Easter), the peak summer season is the best, and busiest, time to visit. Dusk at Tivoli is especially magical: as day turns into night, thousands of lights transform the gardens into a living fairy tale. It’s the perfect place for a romantic stroll after traditional Danish dinner.
