Art Basel 2015

The past weekend the 3rd annual Hong Kong edition of the Art Basel event was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This art fair features modern and contemporary works of the highest quality, and is Asia’s premier and most prestigious art event. It is also held annually in Basel and Miami Beach. The exhibition provides galleries the opportunity to showcase artwork to a global community of museums, private collectors, and the general public. Parallel to the fair, accompanying events and exhibitions are held also held in the hosting city.

Compared to the accompanying Art Central event, Art Basel is much larger and features more internationally established galleries and artists. Taking up the two main exhibition halls at HKCEC, you really need a full day or two to truly appreciate the scale of the show. The event’s popularity inevitably draws big crowds, so it’s best to pace yourself and exercise patience. Thankfully the large venue never felt claustrophobic, and the atmosphere was almost party-like, with everyone snapping photos with their phones. The increased floorspace also allows for some fairly large art installations that you typically don’t see at your neighbourhood gallery.

This is a small selection of some of the art pieces exhibited – click on the photos for a larger view. Who knows, you might soon see some of these works at your local contemporary and modern art museum.
