Despite the colourful decorations adorning the office towers and shopping malls, it doesn’t always feel like Christmas in Hong Kong. Maybe it’s the stretch of unusually warm weather we’ve been having lately. But if there’s one thing guaranteed to jump start your festive mood, it’s a Christmas market!
Officially known as the Stanley Plaza Christmas Seaside Market, the annual event is modeled after a traditional German market. It is held on the two weekends prior to Christmas, and features some 80 vendor stalls of arts and crafts as well as jule-tide related food and drinks. It is supported by the German Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, as well as the German Consulate.
In typical Hong Kong fashion, it was very crowded in the town square though everyone was in good spirits and enjoying the festivities. The only thing missing was some cooler weather and maybe even some snow! Rumour was that Santa was going to make an appearance – unfortunately I found no trace of him, nor his elves… but the children there didn’t seem to mind.
