The festive season is upon us, wrapping up a year that has been unlike any other in our lifetime. Amidst a global pandemic, and months of social unrest followed by a crackdown with a new National Security Law, Hong Kong has seen its fair share of challenges in 2020.
Christmas in the city is typically a time spent with friends and family, and this place which is renowned for its commercial prowess and mass consumerism, a frenzy of holiday shopping as well. This year, though, the usual traditions are made difficult by restrictions on public gatherings to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Still, the malls do their best to lure in shoppers and open their wallets. Christmas decorations and lights are a major draw, and every year the mega-malls spend big money on these installations. And yet, compared to previous years, it does seem that some budgets have been cut back significantly. While the most of the luxury malls are predictably elaborate and lavish, many of the mid-tier shopping centers have been scaled back. Some are hardly Christmas-themed at all.
Here are the malls, one photo for each, all decked out for this most unforgettable Christmas. Which is your favourite this year? Let me know in the comments!
Happy Holidays to all of you, and may you stay healthy and safe wherever you are.
